Edinburgh Experience: Gaining Expertise in Liver Organoid Culture Techniques

Patrycja Daszczuk, a postdoctoral researcher from the Laboratory of Cell Biology, has successfully completed a two-month research internship at the Luke Boulter Research Group at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, University of Edinburgh.

The primary aim of the stay was to gain advanced expertise in liver organoid culture techniques and their application in physiologically relevant in vitro models. This approach supports the development of more accurate and predictive preclinical research systems for studying liver biology.

During the internship, Dr. Daszczuk acquired hands-on experience in generating and culturing liver organoids and complex multicellular assembloids derived from mouse liver tissue. Her work involved isolating and analyzing key liver cell types, performing immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining, and conducting functional cellular assays to study cell behavior. She also gained experience with Precision-Cut Liver Slices (PCLS), an advanced ex vivo model for liver research. Additionally, she developed expertise in establishing organoids from primary pancreatic, intestinal, and kidney cells, broadening the scope of her experimental capabilities.

This international research collaboration has strengthened technical expertise and opened new opportunities for applying advanced organoid-based models in biomedical research.
