From Posters to the Stage: IIMCB Researchers Strengthen Their Science Communication Skills
On 19-20 May 2026, IIMCB hosted a two-day science communication training designed to help researchers present their work more clearly, strategically, and confidently across different formats.
The training was led by Matheus Lourenço, PhD, a science communication trainer at VIB Training and Conferences. Drawing on his experience in science communication, behavioural change, business-oriented communication, and personal coaching, Matheus guided participants through practical approaches to engaging audiences and turning scientific content into effective messages.
The first day, Poster Design and Pitching, focused on the role of scientific posters as tools for starting conversations rather than simply displaying information. Participants worked on defining target audiences, formulating clear key messages, designing posters from scratch, and adapting their content to different levels of engagement – from visual impact to direct interaction. The session also covered pitching techniques, including how to open with a strong hook, structure a short pitch, avoid jargon, and end with a clear call to action.
The second day, Public Speaking and Storytelling, explored how science communication can support behavioural change and help researchers achieve specific communication goals. Participants discussed how to think strategically about audiences, competition, strengths, and desired outcomes. They also worked on storytelling, slide design, online and stage presence, public speaking techniques, managing presentation anxiety, and handling Q&A sessions.
A strong emphasis was placed on interaction and practice. Participants had the opportunity to test their ideas, present in front of others, and receive structured feedback from the trainer and peers. They particularly appreciated the practical format of the training, the space for hands-on exercises, and Matheus Lourenço’s genuine engagement throughout the course.
The training was financed under RACE Events (Task 2.4.). It also reflected IIMCB’s ongoing cooperation with VIB, one of the partners of the RACE Project, supporting the development of practical skills, international knowledge exchange, and research excellence at the Institute.
