Study visit at IGC in Edinburgh: Science Across Borders

Thanks to the support of the project RACE, Sunandan Mukherjee from the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Protein Engineering is undertaking a study visit at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC), University of Edinburgh, under the mentorship of Prof. Grzegorz Kudla.

Sunandan’s project focuses on understanding how the three-dimensional structure of viral RNA influences the way viruses replicate and cause disease. Many viruses store their genetic information in RNA molecules (known as RNA viruses). These RNAs fold into complex shapes that play key roles in controlling infection, interaction with host cells, and virulence.

By combining computational modeling with biochemical data from experiments, he aims to build detailed 3D models of viral RNA and identify structural features critical for its function. These insights could help explain how viruses become infectious and ultimately support the development of new therapeutic strategies to target them.

The IGC provides access to advanced computational tools, expertise in RNA biology, and an inspiring environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. Sunandan notes that this experience not only broadens his scientific perspective but also strengthens the links between the IIMCB and the University of Edinburgh.

The study visit is part of the broader mission of RACE to promote scientific exchange, training, and collaboration between the IIMCB and its international partners (WP2 – Researcher training).
