Mouad Fakhri from the Laboratory of RNA-Protein Interactions Completes Research Visit in Edinburgh

As part of his PhD project, Mouad Fakhri undertook a 15-day research visit to the laboratory of Prof. Tilo Kunath at the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR) in Edinburgh. The visit forms an essential component of the ongoing collaboration between Dr. Gracjan Michlewski’s group at IIMCB and Prof. Kunath’s laboratory, aimed at advancing our understanding of α-synuclein biology in the context of Parkinson’s disease.

Prof. Kunath’s lab brings long-standing expertise in generating and maturing human iPSC-derived neurons, with a particular focus on dopaminergic neurons-a key cell type affected in Parkinson’s disease. Gaining hands-on experience with these advanced differentiation techniques will allow Mouad to transfer the methodology back to IIMCB, where it will strengthen future screening and validation of small molecules with the potential to reduce α-synuclein levels.

Beyond laboratory training, the visit offered valuable opportunities to connect with researchers across the IRR. Scientific discussions-as well as conversations extending beyond research-contributed to a broader perspective and a strong sense of scientific community.

Outside of work, Mouad also had a chance to explore the vibrant cultural and historical landscape of Edinburgh. A standout experience was visiting the iconic Edinburgh Castle, which provided a memorable introduction to the city’s heritage.

The visit is part of the broader mission of RACE to promote scientific exchange, training, and collaboration between the IIMCB and its international partners (WP2 – Researcher training).
